Matthew Kotraba:

What do you enjoy most about being the committeeman for your ward?
"I have always loved the city of St. Louis. Growing up, my father was a UPS driver for the landing. It would be a special event to go down there and be on the McDonald's boat, go to the zoo, go to a baseball game and even one Cardinals football game, and seeing the historical parts of St. Louis, MO. I moved in right after I left the nest so no apartment for me. This area has been nice and so have my neighbors. There are a lot of businesses and restaurants. There are a lot of things to do."

What are the special concerns you have for your ward?
"My number one concern is the increase of crime. I have the Ring app and it is constantly updating me with burglaries, and now more and more shootings. This increase has coincided with events like Kim Gardner getting elected and letting criminals back on the streets as well as the push to defund the police. We need more police, not fewer police. We need to discourage people from committing crime and when they still do it, well, they have to pay a debt to society. Every person and business deserves to be in a crime-free area. Crime, education and taxes can either bring people and businesses into a city or force them to move away. St. Louis used to be one of the largest and greatest cities in the United States. We were an airline hub. We were the largest train hub west of the Mississippi river. We have one of the top 5 rivers right here and I remember boats, like the Admiral that would take day excursions up and down the river (before it was destroyed, before it was a casino, you could actually ride it). Our landing was an attraction. I really would like people and businesses to move back here.."

Why did you get involved in politics, and why do you think others should be involved, too?
"It seems we outsourced our concern with what was going on in government and we did not verify they were doing the right thing. In business, it is trust but verify. We need to get back to holding government accountable to its citizens and start working in the citizens’ best interests instead of their own political futures.
